Vanilla Production in Chanel N.5

Sustainable Design

The aim of this project was to explore the environmental and ethical challenges associated with vanilla cultivation, specifically in the context of Chanel No. 5. With vanilla being a key ingredient in the fragrance, we examined issues such as deforestation, labor exploitation, and the effects of climate change on production. Our goal was to identify innovative, sustainable solutions that could reduce the ecological impact of vanilla farming while maintaining the luxurious quality of the perfume.

In response, we designed a sustainable vertical farming system using bamboo, a renewable material native to Madagascar. This system would maximise space, increase vanilla yield, conserve water, and reduce land usage, while minimizing theft—a common issue in traditional vanilla farming. Additionally, we proposed the use of synthetic vanillin derived from lignin, a more eco-friendly alternative to natural vanilla. This approach not only helps to alleviate environmental and ethical concerns but also provides a scalable, practical solution for more sustainable vanilla production in the luxury fragrance industry. Our response seeks to create a future where luxury products like Chanel No. 5 are produced responsibly, with minimal environmental harm and greater social impact.
